What does Niederlassungserlaubnis mean?

The Niederlassungserlaubnis (settlement permit) is a residence permit without an end date. With it, you may live and work in Germany permanently.

You usually get it after some years with an Aufenthaltserlaubnis, if further conditions are met. These include, for example, German skills and a secure income.

The permit itself does not expire. But the card it is on has an expiry date and must be renewed.
