What does Steuernummer mean?

The Steuernummer (tax number) is your number at your Finanzamt. It is at the top of the Finanzamt's letters and notices.

The Finanzamt gives it to you, for example when you first file a tax return or become self-employed.

If you move and another Finanzamt becomes responsible, you often get a new Steuernummer.

It is not the Steuer-ID. The Steuer-ID always stays the same; the Steuernummer can change.

What you can do

Write the Steuernummer on every letter to the Finanzamt. When you pay, it goes in the Verwendungszweck (payment reference).

  • Steuer-ID The Steuer-ID (tax ID) is your personal number for taxes in Germany. It has eleven digits and stays the same for life.
  • Steuerbescheid A Steuerbescheid (tax assessment) tells you how much tax you must pay or will get back. It usually comes from the Finanzamt.
  • Einspruch With an Einspruch, you challenge certain decisions, for example from the Finanzamt (tax office) or a Bußgeldbescheid (fine).
  • Verwendungszweck The Verwendungszweck (payment reference) is the text you send with a bank transfer. It says what the money is for.
