What does Nachzahlung mean?

Nachzahlung means money paid afterwards. Depending on the letter, you have to pay more, or you get money.

On a Steuerbescheid (tax assessment), Nachzahlung means you still owe tax. The amount and the date are in the Bescheid.

On a Nebenkostenabrechnung (utility bill statement), it means your monthly payments were not enough. You pay the rest to the landlord.

For social benefits, Nachzahlung can also mean the office pays you money you were owed earlier.

If you think a Nachzahlung is wrong, check the calculation. You can file an Einspruch against a Steuerbescheid. An Einspruch usually does not stop the payment.

What you can do

If you cannot pay a Nachzahlung all at once, ask early for instalments or a Stundung (deferral).

  • Steuerbescheid A Steuerbescheid (tax assessment) tells you how much tax you must pay or will get back. It usually comes from the Finanzamt.
  • Einspruch With an Einspruch, you challenge certain decisions, for example from the Finanzamt (tax office) or a Bußgeldbescheid (fine).
  • Ratenzahlung Ratenzahlung (payment in instalments) means you pay a debt in smaller amounts, for example part of it every month.
  • Stundung Stundung (deferral) means you may pay a debt later than it is actually due.
  • Bescheid A Bescheid is a letter in which an office decides something about your case.
