What does Amtsgericht mean?

The Amtsgericht (local court) is a court close to where you live. It handles, for example, smaller disputes about money, rental matters and family matters.

Other courts handle disputes with the Jobcenter, the Krankenkasse or the Finanzamt. These are, for example, the Sozialgericht and the Finanzgericht.

A Mahnbescheid also comes from an Amtsgericht, often from a central payment-order court (Mahngericht) for the whole federal state.

You also apply for Beratungshilfe (legal advice aid) at the Amtsgericht if you have little money.
