What does Kfz-Steuer mean?
Kfz-Steuer (vehicle tax) is a tax on cars, motorbikes and other vehicles. You pay it as long as the vehicle is registered.

The Hauptzollamt is responsible, not the Finanzamt. The tax is usually collected once a year by Lastschrift.
The amount depends, for example, on the engine and the CO2 emissions. It is stated in the Steuerbescheid for the vehicle.
If you deregister the vehicle, the tax ends automatically. You get back any tax you paid too much.
