What does Abmeldung mean?

Abmeldung (deregistration) tells an office that something ends. Usually it means deregistering at the Bürgeramt when you move abroad.

If you move abroad, deregister soon after moving out. The law gives you only a short time for this. If you move within Germany, registering at the new place is enough.

There are also other kinds of Abmeldung, for example for a car, a business or the Rundfunkbeitrag.

Keep the confirmation of your Abmeldung safe. Many offices ask for it later, for example the Beitragsservice.

What you can do

Before you move, also cancel contracts such as electricity, phone and insurance. The Abmeldung does not end them.

  • Anmeldung Anmeldung (registration) means you register your new address at the Bürgeramt. This is compulsory when you move into a home.
  • Bürgeramt The Bürgeramt (citizens' office) is your city's office for ID cards, passports and registering your address.
  • Meldebescheinigung A Meldebescheinigung (proof of registration) shows the address where you are registered. You get it from the Bürgeramt.
  • Rundfunkbeitrag The Rundfunkbeitrag (broadcasting fee) is a fee for public radio and television. Each home pays it once.
  • Beitragsservice The Beitragsservice collects the Rundfunkbeitrag (broadcasting fee) for ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio.
  • Gewerbeanmeldung Gewerbeanmeldung (business registration) registers your own business with the city. You must do it at the latest when you start.
