What does Mieterhöhung mean?

With a Mieterhöhung (rent increase), the landlord wants more rent. They often ask you to agree.

A rent increase is only allowed under certain rules. The landlord often has to justify it, for example with the local rent index (Mietspiegel).

The letter usually says by when you should answer. You do not have to agree at once, and you may have the increase checked.

If you get benefits for your home, for example from the Jobcenter, send the Mieterhöhung there immediately.

What you can do

Have a rent increase checked before you agree, for example by a tenants' association (Mieterverein). Note the date in the letter.
