What does Mietvertrag mean?

The Mietvertrag (rental contract) is the contract between you and your landlord about your home.

It states the rent, the service charges, the deposit and the rules for the home.

Offices often ask for the Mietvertrag as proof, for example the Jobcenter or the Wohngeldstelle.

Not everything in the contract is allowed. Some clauses do not apply. If in doubt, get advice, for example from a tenants' association (Mieterverein).

What you can do

Keep the Mietvertrag and all changes to it safe. Make a copy for offices.

  • Vermieter The Vermieter (landlord) is the person or company that owns the home or rents it to you.
  • Kaution The Kaution (deposit) is money you give the landlord as security. You usually get it back after moving out.
  • Nebenkostenabrechnung The Nebenkostenabrechnung (service charge statement) shows what heating, water, rubbish and other costs of your home cost in the year.
  • Mieterhöhung With a Mieterhöhung (rent increase), the landlord wants more rent. They often ask you to agree.
  • Nachweis A Nachweis is a document that proves something, for example your income, your rent or your address.
