What does Nebenkostenabrechnung mean?

The Nebenkostenabrechnung (service charge statement) shows what heating, water, rubbish and other costs of your home cost in the year.

You pay an amount for service charges every month. Once a year, the landlord works out what it really cost.

If you paid too much, you get money back. If you paid too little, you must pay the difference.

You may look at the receipts. The landlord must send the statement in time. If it comes very late, you often do not have to pay extra.

If you get benefits from the Jobcenter or Sozialamt, send the statement there immediately. It often covers the extra payment.

Compare the statement with last year's. Have big differences checked.
