What does Überzahlung mean?

An Überzahlung (overpayment) means an office paid you more money than you were entitled to.

This happens, for example, if you earned more or your household changed. Sometimes the office made a mistake.

The office usually asks for the money back with an Erstattungsbescheid. Before that, it usually sends you an Anhörung (a chance to respond).

Whether you have to pay can also depend on whether you could have known about the mistake. Explain this in the Anhörung or in your Widerspruch.

What you can do

If you notice yourself that you are getting too much, tell the office immediately. If possible, put the money aside.
