What does Bildung und Teilhabe mean?

Bildung und Teilhabe (education and participation) are benefits for children and young people from low-income families. They help with school, food and leisure.

They include, for example, school supplies, school trips, lunch, tutoring and the fee for a sports club.

You can get them, for example, if the family receives Grundsicherungsgeld (basic income support), Sozialhilfe, Wohngeld or Kinderzuschlag.

Some things you get automatically, for others you need an application. The Jobcenter or the city is responsible.

What you can do

Ask the Jobcenter or your city what you have to apply for. Keep receipts from the school and the club.

  • Bürgergeld Bürgergeld (citizen's income) was the Jobcenter's money for people who can work but lack enough to live on. It had this name until June 2026.
  • Wohngeld Wohngeld (housing benefit) is a subsidy towards your rent or the costs of your own home. It is for people with a low income.
  • Kinderzuschlag Kinderzuschlag (child supplement) is money for families with a low income. It comes on top of Kindergeld.
  • Sozialhilfe Sozialhilfe (social assistance) is help from the Sozialamt for people who lack money to live on. It is for those who get no other benefit.
  • Jobcenter The Jobcenter pays money to live on to people who can work but do not have enough money. It also helps with finding work.
  • Antrag With an Antrag (application), you ask an office for something, for example money or a permit.
