What does Inkasso mean?

Inkasso (debt collection) means a company collects money for a Gläubiger that you supposedly owe them.

A debt collection agency may send reminders and charge fees. But it may not seize anything itself. For that, it needs an enforceable title, for example a Vollstreckungsbescheid.

Check whether the claim is right and whether you know the creditor. The fees are often too high.

Watch out for fraud: there are fake debt collection letters. Do not pay before you have checked the claim.

If you later get a Mahnbescheid from a court, watch the deadline.

What you can do

Object to a wrong claim in writing. A debt advice centre (Schuldnerberatung) or consumer advice centre (Verbraucherzentrale) can help.

  • Gläubiger A Gläubiger (creditor) is a person, company or office that you owe money to, or that claims you do.
  • Mahnung A Mahnung is a letter reminding you that a payment is missing. Fees are often added.
  • Mahnbescheid A Mahnbescheid is a letter from a court. Someone uses it to demand money from you.
  • Schuldnerberatung A Schuldnerberatung (debt advice centre) helps people with debts get an overview and find a way out.
  • Ratenzahlung Ratenzahlung (payment in instalments) means you pay a debt in smaller amounts, for example part of it every month.
