What does Standesamt mean?
The Standesamt (registry office) is the office for births, marriages and deaths. It issues the certificates for them.

This is where, for example, a birth is registered and you get the Geburtsurkunde (birth certificate).
Marriages and name changes also often go through the Standesamt.
If you need a certificate later, ask the Standesamt of the place where the event happened.
